There is no debate that the Barcelos – Santa Isabel region is the most productive watershed in the world for trophy peacock bass. This is due to a number of factors, including the vast number of tributaries, non-existence of heavy commercial fishing, very difficult navigation and the recent awareness of local villagers along the river that the peacock bass is worth significantly more to them alive then laying on the tables of the fish marked in Manaus or Barcelos. Commercial fishing was stopped at 1996 and only subsistence fishermen are allowed to fish on the Rio Negro basin and peacock bass are not the most coveted fish for commercial purposes.

The Yacht Tayacu will take you to some of the most remote reaches of the northern Amazon watershed, including the Rio Negro, Padauiri, Aracá, Cuiuni, Caurés, Arirarrá, Urubaixi, Preto, Alegria, Uneiuxi, as well as hundreds of lakes, lagoons and smaller tributaries. Not only have we fished these areas for 30 years, but we have strong connections to local villagers who provide us information on water levels and fishing opportunities on regular basis.

:: Meet the 3 main species of Peacock Bass found here:

The Tucunaré Açu – Also called barred peacock bass. Their back has a green color which turns out to golden on the sides. It is well known for his three vertical stripes on both sides as well as the black spots situated behind the eyes and the cheeks. This species can reach more than 10 kilog (22 lbs). The Açu is mostly found at lake entrances, calm waters, beaches and around big submerged structures.

The Paca Tucunaré – Also called speckled peacock bass. It is the darkest species of all the peacock bass. It possesses three dark vertical stripes on each side of its body, similar to the Açu tucunaré. In addition, it has a series of white spots along the flanks of its body. The world record (a 27 pound monster) was a speckled peacock bass or paca. Anglers acknowledge that Paca as the strongest fighter of all the peacock bass species, astounding anglers with their brute power. A 12-15 lb paca will be all that a peacock bass angler can handle during a, encounter. Smaller pacas tend to school and are found on river banks and fast waters near rocks and Igarapés entrances.

The Borboleta Tucunaré – Also called butterfly peacock. Is the most colorful and abundant member of the family. It has three oval spots on both sides besides the one on its tail. Borboletas (butterflies) weight on average 2 to 5 lbs but these fish can attain weights over 10 lbs. It´s very common to catch more than one butterfly peacock bass on the same lure. It´s mostly found in shallow lakes, around rocky cover and on drop-offs of islands and bars.
